Wester Theater in the center of the global city of Rotterdam.

About us

On November 21, 1919, the Wester Bioscoop Theater, designed by Karl Weisbard, was opened at Nieuwe Binnenweg 316 in Rotterdam.
With 1,200 seats, it was one of the largest theaters of its time.
It was also at this location that, for the first time in Rotterdam’s history, a sound film was shown. In 1931, the Wester Bioscoop Theater was renovated and reopened as the Capitol Theater.

As one of the few theaters to survive the bombings of World War II, the Capitol Theater became one of the city’s most important cinemas in the 1950s.

In 1962, the cinema began its third life as the GRAND Theater. The balcony was renovated by its new owner, Tuschinski, and converted into a second auditorium called Studio ’62.

In the early 1980s, the cinema came into the hands of the church, and in 2023 it reclaimed its original name, Wester Theater. Today, it is a place for young and old, featuring a variety of large and small auditoriums, modern offices, and a mix of history.
